Bulgaria shares borders Greece and Turkey to the South and the Black Sea to the East. It therefore has a varied culture with many traditions and Bulgarian people take pride in their heritage and are keen to share their cultural and historical past.
With a continental climate, Bulgaria has long, hot, dry summers and - in the mountains particularly - cold winters. Air temperatures in the summer vary between 23°C and 36°C and the sea temperatures between 17°C and 34°C, warmer than the Mediterranean.
Population is very small at roughly 8 million.
Became a member of NATO in March 2004.
Joined the EU in 2007.
