Bulgarian cuisine is delicious, exotic and has the luxury of many influences and traditions from Greece, Turkey, Macedonia & many others. The Bulgarians are proud of their home grown fruit and vegetables, yogurts, wine and in particular Rakia, a plum or grape brandy that must be tried with the locals but not for the faint hearted!
Highlights of the evening meal include: the Shopska salad made from tomatoes, grilled peppers, cucumber, feta cheese & special vinaigrette; and Cheverme, stuffed meat roasted on a spit.
Bulgarian wine is probably the most well known export on the drinks market.
There are hundreds of wineries especially in the Southern regions of Bulgaria, above all Melnik, where red wine is a traditional favourite.
Local breweries also keep up with the market with subsidiaries of Carlsberg, Heineken and Interbrew to name but a few.
The average price of a 2 course meal in a restaurant, for 2 people with a bottle of wine, will surprise you with change from a £10 note. |
